An Aboriginal lawyer says a lawsuit against the Saskatoon police force by the mother of Neil Stonechild is alive and well, despite a recent newspaper report.
Yesterday, the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix ran a story saying the statement of claim for the lawsuit had expired, meaning it was over.
However, Don Worme, the lawyer for the mother of Neil Stonechild, says the suit can still proceed.
Worme adds he is waiting for a few things to happen before he will consider serving the official papers.
He wants to see what happens with the two officers who have been accused of having Neil Stonechild in their custody before he died.
Worme says Brad Senger and Larry Hartwig are appealing their dismissal from the force, and a challenge is also underway into the results of an inquiry examining Stonechild’s death.
He wants those matters to be settled before he proceeds.
