A new study paints a bleak picture of the health of residents living in Saskatoon’s most impoverished neighbourhoods.

According to statistics compiled by the Saskatoon Health Region, there is a wide disparity between the health outcomes of inner-city residents compared to that of those living in more affluent neighbourhoods.

Inner-city people in Saskatoon are 16 times more likely to commit suicide, 14.9 times more likely to contract a sexually-transmitted disease and 35 times more likely to come down with Hepatitis C.

The study also found that infant mortality rates were 3.2 times higher in poor areas of the city, compared to rich neighbourhoods.
