The Indigenous Bar Association of Canada is preparing to bestow a prestigious honour on a prominent First Nations woman from Saskatchewan.
On Friday evening, former provincial court judge Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond will receive the Indigenous Peoples Council Designation.
The award recognizes a legally-trained Aboriginal person for outstanding achievements in the practice of law and contributions to the community.
The honour will be presented to her in B-C, where she now lives and works.
Last year, the Muskeg Lake band member left Saskatchewan to become B-C’s first-ever advocate for children’s rights.
She requested a five-year leave of absence from Saskatchewan’s courts to take the position — leaving open the possibility she will return to her home province.
