The federal government is chipping in with some funding to develop infrastructure on an urban reserve on the eastern outskirts of Saskatoon.

The Muskeg Lake Cree Nation’s reserve in the city was the first urban reserve in Canada created specifically for commercial purposes.

Indian Affairs is providing just under $400,000 to help the band develop roads and expand water, sewer, natural gas and power services on the reserve.

The band is spending just over $200,000 on the project to set the stage for additional commercial development.

The urban reserve was created in 1988 and now accommodates more than 45 businesses and organizations, including the headquarters for the FSIN, SIGA and the Saskatoon Tribal Council.
