Wild Rice Harvest Way Behind Schedule

The man in charge of monitoring the North’s wild rice harvest for the province says there’s very little action to report at this stage.

Gerry Ivanochko says normally at this stage of the harvest, producers have taken off about 1 million pounds of wild rice.

Right now, he estimates only about 100-thousand pounds has been harvested.

Ivanochko was hoping the weather would start cooperating in the last few weeks, but says cool, wet conditions continue to hamper the harvest.

Ivanochko also says it won’t be too long before a killing frost officially puts an end to the harvest.

Ivanochko says without some late warm weather, we can expect a very poor crop in all regions of the North.
