A woman who stabbed her common-law husband is going to prison.
Deborah Lee Waskewitch stabbed Elvis Cook in June 2006.
Yesterday, a judge sentenced her to four years in a Federal Penitentiary but gave her 16 months credit for the time she has served on house arrest and in custody.
The judge also recommended that Waskewitch be transferred as soon as possible to the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge in Cypress Hills to continue getting help for a wide range of issues including the abusive childhood she suffered, addictions and anger management.
David Cook is the father of the deceased. His family has been travelling from a reserve near The Pas, Manitoba, for the hearings and is glad it’s over.
Cook says he is satisfied with the sentence because Waskewitch will be getting help. He and his wife are trying to get in contact with Waskewitch’s three young children before Christmas.
