Competition at the 2010 First Nations Winter Games got underway Tuesday in Saskatoon.
Since the games began in 1974, the number of competitors has grown from around 500 to 3,500 athletes this year.
Games manager Mark Arcand says the games were designed to help youth develop and make it into mainstream sports.
Arcand says there are role models who have done just that, such as University of Saskatchewan Husky Michael Linklater, whose team recently won the national basketball championship, and Scott Daniels who played on three NHL teams.
