Aboriginal people need to address the issue of HIV from a traditional and holistic perspective.
That’s according to Margaret Akan, the executive director of the All Nations Hope AIDS Network in Regina.
Akan is reacting to last week’s news of a multi-year provincial strategy that will involve First Nations, Metis and community organizations.
She says her organization sees the impact that HIV diagnosis has in First Nations communities.
Akan says more resources need to be dedicated to helping grassroots organizations, adding groups like hers can’t be left behind.
She also says the strategy should include addressing the related diseases of Hepatitis C and addictions, because she feels those issues are being neglected.
