Aboriginal MP Benefits From Changing Eating Habits

A Manitoba MP says he lost 60 lbs. in five months — on a traditional Aboriginal diet.
Rod Bruinooge says a relative’s diabetes diagnosis — and his own Aborginal ancestry — alarmed him enough to make a lifestyle change.
The representative for Winnipeg South says, as an MP, he attends functions with tasty food that are not all that nutritious.
Bruinooge says his lifestyle of eating rich foods was putting his health at risk — so he switched to a diet more consistent with Aboriginal traditional foods.
Bruinooge is from a northern community, so he says switching to a diet of freshwater fish was not a problem.
He says he also eats bison, which is plentiful in Manitoba.
Bruinooge recommends eating traditional meats and whole grains, and avoiding processed sugars.
He will be speaking at a food symposium on Monday about his success with traditional foods.
