The Assembly of First Nations is embarking on a new project designed to reduce poverty.

The five-year initiative is aimed at improving the health and well-being of First Nations communities.

Under the terms of the $2.5-million project, research teams will work with five volunteer bands to identity challenges, strengths and opportunities.

The results will be used in a strategic plan for the respective communities.

That plan will be put in place and the results studied.

One of the doctors heading up the project says last year’s H1N1 virus outbreak is yet another stark example of the relationship between poverty and poor health.
