An award for good governence is a reminder of long-serving leaders.

That’s according to Heather Bear, a band councillor from the Ochapowace First Nation.

Ochapawace received a $50,000 cheque over the weekend for its first-place performance in an Aboriginal governance survey conducted by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy.

Bear says the award memorialized the work of her reserve’s late chief, Denton George.

Policy centre staff travelled across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, surveying First Nation residents about the administration, elections and transparency of their community.

Out of the top 10 surveyed, eight First Nations were in Saskatchewan.

A total of 78 communites participated in the survey, which was in its fourth year.
