Police and conservation officers in La Ronge were forced to put down a bear Wednesday night after it was found rummaging through garbage near Police Point.

The bear had been spotted in the community earlier in the week, but attempts to trap it failed when the animal ran off.

Conservation officer Daryl Minter says when Saskatchewan Environment showed up on the scene the other night, the bear had been shot by police and was caught in a tree wounded.

Officers then took the animal down.

Minter says they don’t believe there are other bears in the area.

He says bears should not be a problem in town, but it is still best for residents to cover their garbage and take care.
