Chief Speaks Out About Legal Case

The chief of the Fond Du Lac First Nation is speaking out about an impaired driving charge laid against him recently.

 

Chief Napoleon Mercredi says he wants people to know he has nothing to hide.

 

But at the same time he wants people to remember you are innocent until proven guilty.

 

The chief says a lot of false rumours have been spread about his case including one report that suggested band funds were being used for his defence.

 

Mercredi stresses he is paying for the case out of his own money.

 

The chief explains that under the election act a chief can be removed if he is convicted of an indictable offence.

 

However, Mercredi notes his case involves a summary offence which is much less serious.

 

And he adds the matter is still before the courts, meaning he is innocent until proven guilty.
