A woman who grew up with a veteran who passed away this weekend wants people to remember her friend as a good person.

Josephine Greyeyes of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation passed away on Saturday.

She was a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps, having enlisted at the age of 21.

Virginia Pechawis also served in the Second World War, although not with Greyeyes.

However, they have known each other since they were little girls attending residential school together.

Pechawis wants people to know that Greyeyes was stubborn but kind, and treated everyone equally.

Greyeyes was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal for her years of services.

A funeral for her is taking place later today.
