It was a close call for two occupants of a float plane that crashed in the lake in La Loche Saturday night.

Sometime between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m., the Savannah 912 they were in overturned in the water during a landing attempt.

Peter Hildebrandt of the Transportation Safety Board says the wheels in the plane’s amphibious floats were extended downward during the landing, resulting in the plane turning over.

Fortunately, the two occupants were able to get out of the plane alive and were eventually taken to shore.

Hildebrandt says the plane suffered some damage.

He says an investigation will not be launched — but the TSB will keep the incident on file.

Locals say the plane is still in the water, and they are worried about the environmental impact.
