FNUC Funding Won’t Be Restored: Strahl

The federal government has turned down a request from supporters of the First Nations University of Canada to restore funding to the troubled institution.

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl told the Commons he met with teachers, students, Aboriginal leaders and others today — and told them their financial problems haven’t gone away, so the money won’t be restored.

Student body president Diane Adams says many of those at the Regina-based school will end their post-secondary education rather than go to mainstream universities.

Saskatchewan Aboriginal leaders handed over control of the school’s finances to the University of Regina on Tuesday in the hope that the federal government would restore funding.
