The president of the First Nations University of Canada has confirmed the university’s plan to sell the Saskatoon campus building and relocate the School of Indian Social Work.
Dr. Shauneen Pete met with students, staff and faculty of the Saskatoon campus yesterday to inform them of the decision, and to announce layoffs at the campus.
Pete says there will be layoffs at the university’s other campuses, as well.
She adds this move is part of the FNUC’s restructuring plan to generate cost savings — and would have taken place even if the federal government had come through with the remaining $4.2 million it is withholding from the school.
However, Pete says there could be more changes if the federal funding is not reinstated by the fall.
She also says courses will continue to be offered to the current students at the Saskatoon campus, and they will be able to complete their programs.
The Saskatoon building’s value has been assessed at $2.5 million.
Meanwhile, the province has finalized a $5.2 million funding agreement between the FNUC, the University of Regina and Meyers Norris Penny.
Under the agreement, the accounting firm will administer the funding and provide regular financial reports.
