Northern Saskatchewan has lost a long-time public servant.
Former MLA Fred Thompson passed away Wednesday in Saskatoon with his wife and family at his side.
He represented the Athabasca constituency on behalf of the NDP from 1975 to 1995.
Born and raised in Big River, he eventually moved to Buffalo Narrows to start a mink ranch.
It’s there he met his wife Therese, and started a family.
Current MLA Buckley Belanger says Thompson’s hard work and dedication to the north won’t be forgotten.
A memorial service for Thompson will be held in Buffalo Narrows on July 24th at 2:00pm at the Lakeview Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny or the University of Saskatchewan Neurosurgery Department.
