Former Student Critical Of Truth Commission

One of the first Saskatchewan survivors of residential school abuse to take the issue to the courts questions the value of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Kelly Anderson of the Gordon First Nation attended the reserve’s residential school from 1979 to 1981.

Anderson says he can see how the commission benefits the government with the exposure it has generated — but doesn’t see how survivors will gain from this process, adding Aboriginal people shouldn’t just follow what the government wants.

Anderson says he really wanted to see the United Nations help lead this initiative — not Ottawa.

The TRC is holding its first hearing this week in Winnipeg.
