Over five dozen people are hitting the books these days as they train to be peacekeepers on First Nations reserves throughout Saskatchewan.
Classes began on February 1st in locations including Yorkton, Prince Albert, La Ronge and the Moosomin First Nation.
Trainees receive instruction in a variety of disciplines including mediation, suicide intervention and interviewing techniques.
Dawn Fleming is the program head of Law Enforcement at the SIAST Woodland campus in Prince Albert.
She says peacekeepers have been on various reserves for quite a while, but there hasn’t been standardized training for them until now.
Fleming says the trainees will be in class until the end of March.
Advanced training begins in mid-April.
The training is being done in conjunction with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
