La Ronge Area Forest Fires Creating Smoke Issues

While leaders in Hall Lake now say that an evacuation is not likely, representatives at the provincial fire centre say shifting winds could bring more forest fire smoke into the northern Saskatchewan community this afternoon.
Fire centre spokesperson Jeanette Krayetski says there is no direct threat to Hall Lake from either the 20-hectare Denny fire 7 kms west of the reserve or the smaller Neeyak fire to the south — but warns that winds could blow smoke back into the community this afternoon.
Krayetkski adds Saskatchewan Environment is also monitoring a fire burning near Missinipe and crews have begun work in the area.
She says while most people will be fine, smoke could affect the elderly, young children and those with chronic illnesses in both areas.
Officials in Hall Lake put people in those categories on evacuation alert last night.
Krayetski notes there are a total of 66 fires burning in the La Ronge fire centre area alone — and all their resources are being used.
She adds the rain in the forecast for this weekend will certainly be welcome.
