A program to help people recover from tobacco addiction is being piloted on the Little Pine First Nation today.

The idea for the Tobacco Addiction Recovery Program came up about six weeks ago, according to Jaimee Marks, an Aboriginal fitness instructor from Regina.

Marks says the goal of the program is to release people from their addiction to tobacco, but still preserve tobacco for ceremonial use.

Participants are given a white ribbon to keep with them as they go through the program.

Once they complete it, they’re encouraged to bury the ribbon with some tobacco somewhere clean where nobody goes.

Marks is hopeful other bands will contact her soon, so she can bring the program to them.
