Consultations between a mining company and a Metis Group in eastern Saskatchewan are getting a favourable response from a local leader.

Helen Johnson is the area director for Metis Eastern Region 2.

Johnson says there has been an excellent working relationship between her people and Shore Gold for the past three years.

The company is looking for diamonds in Fort a’la Corne and has signed four MOUs with Aboriginal groups in the region, including one with her organization on March 31st.

Johnson says public meetings this week in Melfort and Nipawin have resulted in a good sharing of knowledge between the two sides.

She says the company has listed jobs that might become available if a mine is ever built — and the Metis have begun to inform the company about particular Metis sites they consider sensitive.

Johnson says Shore Gold is definitely doing a good job of consulting them.

She adds the second part of the duty to consult process, which involves accommodation, will come at a later date.
