Metis in Prince Albert have reached an agreement with Shore Gold.
This morning, local area director Darlene McKay signed a letter of understanding with the company in relation to activities in the Fort a’la Corne region.
Shore Gold has been exploring the area for diamonds in the hopes of setting up a commercial operation there.
Today’s MOU gives the Metis some assurances that they will be considered for jobs, training and business opportunities.
McKay says she is happy with the agreement and believes Shore Gold has done a good job of consulting her group so far.
According to McKay, residents from the Prince Albert area still use the Fort a’la Corne area for traditional activities like hunting and berry-picking.
She notes that she has heard stories of an old Metis settlement that used to exist in the region.
McKay says she has heard some of those inhabitants ended up in the Green Lake area.
