More Money Possibly for Weather Damage

The amount of money people hit by flooding, hail or other disasters can get may be going up.

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Yogi Huyghebaert gave that hint in North Battleford on Friday.

Huyghebaert said currently, the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program covers uninsurable losses up to $160,000 for things like floods, tornados, plough winds and severe storms.

Huyghebaert said a provincial committee is considering raising that figure because houses are worth more than they used to be.

He noted in 2007 it was raised from a previous limit of $100,000.

Huyghebaert said his committee is also considering cutting the deductible. That’s the amount of the clean-up or repair costs that property owners have to pay themselves.

Currently, the province pays 80 percent, and property owners have to pay 20 percent.

The committee is also looking at cutting the time it takes for claimants to receive money.
