Muskeg Lake Elders Home Closing

The Muskeg Lake Elders Home will be closing its doors in less than two weeks due to the financial impact it’s been having on the band.

Muskeg Lake Chief Cliff Tawpisin says it’s been costing about 1.3 million dollars to operate the facility and says that’s no longer sustainable.

He hopes to meet with provincial and federal counterparts to look at how such a care home can be funded long-term.

Tawpisin says the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region is trying to find spaces for the 25 Elders.

He says if that doesn’t happen right away, the health region will provide some funding for day-to-day operations.

Tawpisin says the health region has been a good partner but says the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs moratorium on operating funding for long-term care homes on-reserve is a contributing factor to suspending operations.
