A memorial service is taking place this afternoon for a Regina man who helped co-author a landmark treaty case.
Jack Ebbels has passed away at the age of 61.
Born and raised in Saskatchewan, he was the chief counsel and negotiator for the first modern treaty signed in British Columbia.
Completed in the late 1990s, the Nisga’a deal went into effect in May of 2000.
It transferred 2,000 square kilometres of Crown land to the Nisga’a people.
According to a report in the National Post, the band held a minute of silence upon learning of Ebbels’ death.
Ebbels is survived by his son and ex-wife.
