Northern Health Region Changes Health Card Policy

The Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority is asking residents to bring their health cards with them when going in for treatment.

CEO Richard Petit says the new mandate, effective August 1st, is for the safety of the patients.

He explains that many people assume that doctors and nurses know them — and while that’s true most of the time, mistakes can still happen.

Petit says more and more nurses are from out-of-province and don’t necessarily know everyone in the community.

He adds the health region is also trying to meet standards set by Accreditation Canada.

Petit advises anyone without a health card to contact the government for a new one or call the health region.
