Indian Affairs says changes are coming to the Canada Post Food Mail program.

The new program is called Nutrition North Canada, and it applies to communities where groceries have to be flown in — including Wollaston Lake, Uranium City and Fond du Lac.

Under the new program, the transportation of fruits, vegetables, bread, fresh meats, milk and eggs will be subsidized in northern communities at a higher rate.

Project lead Leo Doyle says they want to tilt the program away from less nutritious food items and situations where food can be transported over ice roads.

Eligible food items will also include a provision to improve access to commercially-produced traditional, northern foods.

Changes will begin to take effect on October 3rd.

Full implementation of the new program will begin on April 1st of next year.
