A ceremony was held yesterday to mark the fifth anniversary of a band-owned Petro Canada gas bar in Prince Albert.

The facility, which is owned by the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, is located on reserve land in the city and employs 20 people — 19 of whom are First Nations.

Peter Ballantyne Chief Darrell McCallum says the gas bar employees have received over $3 million in combined wages since it opened, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

McCallum adds the band is looking into the possibility of setting up a similar station in Melfort.

He says PBCN is also actively working to convert another gas station in Creighton to reserve status, and plans to open another gas station in Prince Albert next year.
