Police Consider SIGA Theft Suspect A Flight Risk

A man charged with stealing more than a million dollars from the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority will find out tomorrow if he has to remain in custody as his case makes its way through the courts.

Earlier today, Alain Germain appeared on a charge of theft and fraud for allegedly taking nearly $1.2 million from ATMs at SIGA casinos.

He was scheduled to appear in June, but his court date got bumped up when he told police he had plans to go to Mexico for a doctor’s appointment.

Detective Sergeant Dennis Scott says he became concerned because Germain wouldn’t have been back in time for his June court date.

Scott says the legal proceedings were moved up a month because the police and Crown prosecutor were concerned he was a flight risk — or at the very least, wouldn’t be back in time for his court date.

He adds police didn’t look into whether or not Germain really did have a doctor’s appointment.

The alleged fraud occurred between January 9th and May 7th of last year.

Germain has already gone public with his story, through the media, and police say he also admitted to the charges on video with a lawyer present.
