RCMP Responding To Reserve Calls Quicker

GPS technology is helping Rural RCMP get to emergencies on Battlefords-area reserves faster and more efficiently.

According to RCMP Staff Sgt. Howard Nodwell, it’s been difficult in the past, because on many reserves there are no house numbers or street signs.

He says that makes it hard for police to find their way to the exact place they need to get to.

RCMP worked with First Nations to solve that problem on five reserves: Moosomin, Red Pheasant, Saulteaux, Mosquito, and Sweetgrass.

GPS technology was used to pinpoint locations, and then that information was cross-referenced with house numbers.

In total, about 700 locations have been uploaded to GPS navigation systems in each police vehicle that works in those areas.

The system also provides directions to all legal land locations.
