Saskatchewan Liberals Attempt To Woo Native Voters

Aboriginal people would have a lot more influence if the Liberals form the next provincial government, according to party leader Ryan Bater.

The Liberals held a policy convention in Saskatoon on the weekend, and FSIN Vice-Chief Delbert Wapass was the keynote speaker.

Bater says as a result of Wapass’s speech, Liberals passed a motion designed to improve the lives of Aboriginal people.

It says any discussions a Liberal government had with First Nations would reflect the spirit of the treaties.

Bater says Saskatchewan people have a shocking lack of knowledge about the treaties.

The resolution also says an Aboriginal secretariat would be created that Bater says would give Aboriginal people a voice right into the Premier’s office.

The motion also says the number of Aboriginal people hired for government jobs would reflect the province’s Aboriginal population.
