A consultant from the Onion Lake Cree Nation says it’s time First Nations parents reclaimed their Indigenous background.

Janet Fox says some seminars being held in Saskatchewan next month will show families how they can begin to improve their parenting skills through traditional teachings.

She says First Nations families have suffered from the effects of colonization for too long.

Fox says poverty is one of the main reasons for the breakdown in parenting skills in the Aboriginal community.

She estimates there are currently 27,000 First Nations children in the country in outside care.

Fox says Asian families in this country very rarely have children placed in government care, because Asian people place so much emphasis on cultural and family preservation.

She notes Asian Canadians are not afraid to speak their first language everywhere, including small children.
