A spokesman for a national residential school survivors’ organization says it’s being punished for speaking out on issues.

Executive Director Mike Cachagee says the federal government didn’t provide core funding to the society from April 1st to September of last year.

He says as a result, the organization was forced to fund its operations with credit cards and an overdraft from a First Nations credit union.

INAC has cut funding to the National Residential Schools Survivors Society while it investigates how the group spent money during the past year.

INAC officials say they want to find out if the group spent money according to the original agreement.

Cachagee says the cut in funding is a way of punishing the society because it’s been critical of the government and churches.
