A new statue has been erected at the Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton.

A leather cutting ceremony was held to honour the work entitled “Counting Coup”.

First Nations artist Lionel Peyachew commissioned the work, one of the largest bronze commissions in the province.

Peyachew says the sculpture represents a traditional First Nations game of chance, strategy and horsemanship between warring tribes, in which warriors would try to touch an enemy warrior with a bare hand as an alternative to killing him.

According to Peyachew, a warrior who was successful in attempting this would paint an imprint of their hand on their horse.

Peyachew says the Yorkton casino’s name gave him the idea for his work.

The statue will be displayed prominently in front of the casino’s main entrance.
