How do abandoned mines in northern parts of Canada affect Aboriginal people?

A history professor in Newfoundland wants to find out.

So Memorial University History Professor John Sandlos has set up a study of abandoned mines across the north.

He says the study could be very useful because many companies are considering re-opening abandoned mines.

Sandlos says the study could help Northern communities decide how they feel about re-opening those mines.

But Sandlos stresses the purpose of the project is not to tell Aboriginal people what to think.

He says it’s up to them to analyze the material and decide for themselves.

Work on the study began about a year ago.

Results are expected to be shared with communities over the next two years.
