A public health nutritionist for the province’s north says the high cost of eating healthy in the region can be addressed by sharing that information, as well as supporting groups that are working to address it.

Cathryn Abrametz is one of the authors of “The Cost of Healthy Eating in Saskatchewan 2009: Impact on Food Security” — a study which found a family of four in the province spends $205 on groceries in a week, while the same family in the north would spend nearly $50 more than that.

She notes these numbers do not include things like transportation, so families in the north who travel to different locations for groceries would have an even higher cost.

Abrametz says one way to work at addressing that discrepancy is by supporting community gardens and community kitchens.

She also suggests asking local grocery stores to supply healthy foods.

Abrametz says people should also talk to their local politicans about issues surrounding the ability to eat healthy foods, such as income and affordable housing.
