A northern Saskatchewan reserve is the first to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with a diamond company that hopes to build a mine on the band’s traditional territory.
Earlier this week, Shore Gold announced it signed an MOU with the Sturgeon Lake First Nation.
Shore Gold Vice-President of Corporate Affairs Eric Cline says the agreement commits both parties to talk about how Sturgeon Lake can be involved in the mine through jobs, training, and possibly business contracts.
He says information gathering agreements have been signed with the Red Earth Cree Nation, as well as two Metis groups — but he says those are more about the environmental impact assessment statement.
Cline says the next steps include getting environmental approval from the province and federal government, as well as completing a full feasibility study in order to attract financing.
