A surprising turn of events took place today at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench in the trial of a man accused of killing an elder on the Mistawasis First Nation.
The man accused in the killing, Vince Dreaver, unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty by manslaughter.
He admits to killing 81-year-old Antoine Sand on the reserve back in August 6th, 2007.
Speaking outside the courthouse, defence lawyer Morris Bodnar explained his client only made the decision after hearing all the evidence.
Both the Crown and defence have decided on a joint submission of five years in jail.
Bodnar notes his client has already spent three years in remand.
However, a son of the deceased said outside court that he wasn’t happy over the decision, and felt Dreaver should have been tried for first-degree murder.
Family members will read their victim impact statements tomorrow morning.
