A funeral is being held today for a young woman who died trying to get help for three family members whose car got stuck in remote northern Saskatchewan.

Kerri Canepotatoe walked more than 60 kilometres in search of help, but eventually died from exposure on the side of a highway.

Her uncle, Paul Rabbitskin, says it makes him sad to think about his 18-year-old niece walking through the night on a road thick with boot-sucking mud and timber wolf tracks.

It was only after Canepotatoe’s body was found that the RCMP began searching for the other woman and two boys in the car.

They were finally found alive seven days after they got stuck.

An investigation is underway to determine why a 9-1-1 call from someone in the car went unheeded.

Rabbitskin says the system failed the travellers.

Rabbitskin says his niece was a brave young woman who ended up sacrificing her own life to save the lives of three others, adding she is a hero.

Today’s funeral is taking place on the Island Lake First Nation.
