A vote by the United Nations could apparently impact infrastructure demands by First Nations.

Meera Karunananthan is a policy expert with the council of Canadians.

She says a resolution passed yesterday at the U.N. calls on countries to recognize water and sanitation needs as human rights.

For years, she says, many countries including Canada vocally argued against the move.

However, she says the fact it’s passed means bands can use the resolution as a tool when negotiating with government.

124 countries voted in favour of the motion while 42, including Canada, abstained.
