Wild Rice Crop Looking Promising, Markets Don’t

Even with the prospect of an above average crop this year, wild rice producers in the province’s north may still have some trouble getting rid of their supply.

Weather has been favourable for most producers, and Saskatchewan Agriculture agrologist Gerry Ivanochko says it could be a great harvest if the weather continues to cooperate.

He says growers are looking for hotter, drier weather — noting the crop is late because of cooler weather in the spring.

But Ivanochko says the real problem is the market for wild rice.

He says it remains low despite the gradual turnaround of the world’s economy — meaning producers may, once again, have to sit on their crop.
