Wood Harvesters Agree To Preserve Parts Of Forest

An unprecendent agreement signed yesterday between forest product companies and environmental organizations has implications in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement was signed by 21 member companies of the Forest Products Association of Canada and nine environmental groups such as the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and Greenpeace — some of whom are suspending their “do not buy” campaigns while this agreement is being implemented.

The agreement will conserve significant areas of the country’s boreal forest in order to protect threatened woodland caribou.

In Saskatchewan, that means more than 850,000 hectares of caribou range will not be harvested or have roads built on it.

Saskatchewan is home to more than 39.5 million hectares of boreal forest.
