This year’s edition of the Woodland Cree Gathering is getting underway today.
For the next four days, members of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and Montreal Lake Cree Nation will gather at Molanosa to discuss treaty issues.
Event organizer Leonard Hardlotte says this year’s special guests include the province’s treaty commissioner, as well as the chief of the Onion Lake Cree Nation and chief the of the English River
Dene Nation.
Hardlotte says Onion Lake Chief Wallace Fox has a “great interpretation” of the spirit and intent of the treaties, while English River Chief Ralph Paul has been working on the duty to consult issue for a long period of time.
Hardlotte says it’s important to get outside voices coming to the event so the Woodland Cree can get additional perspective.
