Work Underway On Northern Recreational Facilities

A new skateboard park in La Ronge should be up and running by late summer.
According to Mayor Thomas Sierzycki, equipment is currently arriving from Alberta and work on the pad will start soon.
Sierzycki was one of several guest speakers at this week’s Northern Physical Activity Roundtable in Prince Albert.
Other projects proceeding in the province’s north include construction of a track in Pinehouse.
Paving of the track begins today.
Pinehouse has also received accreditation from the province’s Special Olympics Committee to host a meet for northern Saskatchewan athletes with disabilities in the future.
Sierzycki says he’s pleased to see projects like this moving ahead, noting it takes a lot of effort to construct new facilities.
He adds he’s confident the park will provide youth in La Ronge with a proactive and healthy thing to do.
However, many of the leaders attending the session in Prince Albert say getting new facilities means cutting through a lot of red tape.
Hatchet Lake Chief Bart Tsannie says even after his community received a $1.3 million loan for their new arena, they couldn’t start construction.
He explains they had to get Indian Affairs to sign off on the project, which took considerable time.
Many of the participants say they’re encouraged to hear about projects like these, though, as it sets the stage for more development in the future.
