Aboriginal Student Centre Delayed Over Funding

A University of Saskatchewan spokesman is confident an on-campus Aboriginal student centre will be built, even though it only has one-third of the money.

U of S Associate Vice President of Facilities Colin Tennant says so far, only $5 million has been raised.

The total cost is estimated at $15 million.

But Tennant says that’s not including money from the federal and provincial governments, and he’s sure both the province and Ottawa will kick in some funding.

Tennant says if the university raises $10 million to $12 million, the centre will be built.

The purpose of the building is to be a central source of services for Aboriginal students.

It would also provide a home for an Indigenous Student Council, and provide a place for Aboriginal ceremonies, lectures and gatherings.
