Big River Works On Getting Alberta Sawmill

Leaders in Big River and area are going after an Alberta company to set up a sawmill in the town.

Mayor Brian Brownfield says it will likely take about two years to close the deal.

Last year, the Big River task force worked closely with EACOM out of B.C.

EACOM ended up buying the old Big River sawmill, but didn’t get the wood allocation from the government that they were looking for.

The task force made several phone calls to EACOM but with no luck, so now they’re pursuing this Alberta company.

Brownfield says what EACOM does with its mill is up to them.

In the meantime, Big River is also applying to the province to do much the same thing Green Lake is doing: attract tourists.

Brownfield hopes to hear back from the province on that application after November 1st.
