The Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar wants to see changes to First Nations accounting practices.
Conservative MP Kelly Block says First Nations leaders should voluntarily release financial information on a regular basis — either through an annual report or on a website, instead of sending the information only to Indian Affairs as is currently done.
Block says that would bring First Nations leaders up to the same level of financial accountability as other Canadian leaders.
She has introduced a private members bill called the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
Block says she has received numerous e-mails from First Nations and non-First Nations people about this issue.
She says some have asked her why she is doing it, but no one has said it is a bad idea.
