The president of Claude Resources is commenting on environmental charges that were recently laid against his company.

Neil McMillan says the gold mining operation is committed to being as “perfect” as possible from a safety and environmental point of view.

Yesterday, the company was in court pleading guilty to three violations under the Fisheries Act.

The charges include depositing an acutely lethal effluent, depositing effluent containing total suspended solids in excess of prescribed limits where they may come into contact with fish, and failing to report to an inspector without delay when monitoring tests have exceeded the prescribed limits.

McMillan says he hopes northerners realize his company is committed to good environmental practices.

However, he declines to get into the specifics of what happened.

The charges were laid after Environment Canada’s enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the Seabee Gold Mine on June 3rd, 2009.

As a result of the violations, the company has been ordered to pay $90,000 in fines.
